It Don't Mean a Thing If All You've Got is Swing

With todays oversized drivers with larger sweet spots and balls that fly further, why hasn't your score gone down a lot? According to the National Golf Foundation, the score for the recreational golfer has dropped only 1/2 of a stroke since 2000. That's incredible if you think about it. Without a doubt the most advancements in technology have occurred within the last ten years and yet the average score has barely moved. Obviously there must be something we are missing here. The new clubs and balls are supposed to make the game easier for the average golfer. But has it?

Some people blame it on the courses being harder but most people play on courses that are over 10 years old so that can't be all of the answer. The courses that the tour plays on have attempted to make themselves harder by narrowing the fairways, adding more water and sand and making the courses longer. But do you play on those courses? Probably not.

Let us posit that there must be something else going on. Here's the reason, the advancement in technology is certainly good but it is offset by the changes in our daily routines. We are all busier than we used to be, we all have more pressures in our lives and that leads to less time spent on practicing and improving our game. So by having less time to improve our game we go nowhere when it comes to our score, or worse, we go backwards and get worse.

If you want to get better and have your scores go lower then you have to practice. That's it. No magic swing fix or buying the latest driver with a sweet spot as large as a silver dollar (if you are old enough to know how large a silver dollar actually is). Buying the latest video or the latest book on how to fix your swing. How about this. You buy a book on how to fix your golf swing but don't have time to read it. Been there and done that.

40% of your score comes from putts. That's right 40%! When you add everything around the green like chipping and short pitch shots and putting, the percentage goes up to nearly 60%. So having the latest driver or the next great set of irons with the newest technology means you are working on only 40% of your game.

To fix a problem you must first identify it as a problem. So less time to practice is a problem and buying the latest gizmos to work on only 40% of your game is a problem.

So what's the solution to the problem? Practice Like the Pros Do.... At Home! I think everyone will agree that if it was as convenient as just walking out your backdoor to practice, you would naturally practice more. How about coming home from a hard day with lots of stress and pressure and then relaxing and unwinding while you work on your short game? You really can get away from it all with a backyard putting green. Every time you look out your patio door you will see a beautiful, manicured putting green. Your score will naturally go down because you practice more. If you are an average golfer and make just a 10% improvement in your short game......your score will drop by 6 strokes! There is no way any advances in technology can do that, it just takes time to practice. The pros have access to the very latest in technology and they are constantly practicing. And the professionals work on their short game a lot more than they work on any other portion of their game.

So you need to practice and in order to practice, it needs to be really convenient. And a backyard putting green is about as convenient as you can get.

Or yeah, and your golf buddies will be green with envy too (pun intended).
